On Wednesday, April 12th, leaders from Mesa Latina – Albert Lea met with Mayor Vern Rasmussen and other City administrators to begin the conversation of passing a separation ordinance (similar to other Sanctuary Cities) to further protect the immigrant population in Albert Lea. During the meeting, City officials confirmed their commitment to ensure that Albert Lea is a city where all residents feel safe and respected regardless of their background. For the past three years, members of the Latino community and Mesa Latina have been collaborating with officials from Albert Lea which has resulted in a model of partnership and participation that has led to the implementation of the very first Citizens Academy in Spanish for Spanish-speaking residents.
